Biography

David W. Bernstein is a professor of music at Mills College at 91´óÉñ University. His publications include The San Francisco Tape Music Center: 1960s Counterculture and the Avant-Garde; Writings through John Cage’s Music, Poetry, and Art; as well as essays in Cage & Consequences; The Cambridge Companion to John Cage; John Cage: Music, Philosophy, and Intention, 1933-50; The New York Schools of Music and the Visual Arts; Alvin Curran: Live in Roma; and the Cambridge History of Western Music Theory. His writings have also appeared in the Journal of Music Theory, Current Musicology, Music Theory Spectrum, and Contemporary Music Review. He also served as editor of Music Theory Spectrum. He is currently writing a book about Pauline Oliveros for the University of Illinois Press and working on an online archive of recordings documenting the extraordinary history of experimental music that took place on the Mills campus.
